/&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:arial;"&gt;My Nuffield Scholarship experience started in Melbourne, Australia.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The UK (&amp;amp; Irish) 2008 Scholars met up with the rest of the world 2008 Nuffield Scholars (Australian, New Zealand and Canadian).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It was an amazing experience!&lt;br /&gt;Somewhat like a 'boot-camp' - early starts, late finishes (for some this merged together!).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We had presentations from world experts of the future of Agriculture and we toured round a number of farming and food businesses around the Victoria region.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I don't know what the international Nuffield motto is - but it should: 'Work hard, play hard!'&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I also visited:&lt;br /&gt;Brisbane &amp;amp; the Gold coast; Sydney and Tasmania. All had exciting and different reasons why they were interesting from a food marketing and retailing point of view.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;More on this later...&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The most compelling point I have learnt is that Australian farming businesses have an incredibly close sense of what makes money and how quickly they react to opportunities.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;From a world perspective, it has become clear that we are heading for an extended period where commodity crops are in shortage. This looks likely to accelerate as a world issue and therefore opportunity for Agriculture.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Australian shoppers have contrasting choices in food retail:&lt;br /&gt;Coles and Woolworths dominate the Supermarket offer and their position as a (possibly) duopoly has resulted in a very average offer compared to European and North American stores. They have, however, a number of stunning 'markets', these range from Farmers Markets that are growing rapidly to '7 days a week' food markets.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The range and selection is mind blowing - it seems that 'going to the market' is very much part of Aussie life.
